Mystical Religion

Religion.

It breeds self-righteousness and intolerance. It uses guilt and shame to control people. It's what is wrong with the world. And Jesus hates it. For the message of religion—"I obey, therefore I'm accepted"—is the opposite of the gospel: "I'm accepted in Jesus, therefore I obey."

Join us this fall as we explore why Jesus hates religion in all of its forms.

The Jesus-Loving Church

As the gospel takes root in our hearts, everything changes. Every decision, every word, every thought—all of life—is given new meaning and true purpose in God’s vast plan of redemption. He is reconciling all things to himself through the gospel of Jesus, transforming the world into an everlasting city where the awareness of his glory permeates everything—and your life, this church, and our city play a vital part. Beginning with Richmond, God is calling us to proclaim the good news about Jesus throughout the world. Grasp the vision to impact eternity. Put down roots for the glory of God.

God calls his people to seek the flourishing of the city where he has placed us, for in the city’s flourishing we will find our flourishing. (Jeremiah 29:7; Acts 17:26)

Making Much of Jesus

When the gospel collides with diverse religious expressions and widespread Christian confusion, problems abound. The first letter to the Corinthians sheds the light of the gospel on real life situations that trouble every church darkened by such confusion. The gospel changes infantile believers into mature Christ-followers whose lives are saturated with the good news of Jesus.

Proclaiming Jesus: Word & Deed

This four-part series explores some of life’s most significant questions:

Who is Jesus?
How can I know God?
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
How can we improve the world?

The answers to these questions sets of truths in which both parts must be emphasized equally and fully—like parallel tracks—without both the train derails. These jointly connected sets are the essential and inseparable truths of the Gospel, which provides us with the right perspective for living life as God intended.

The Church Stands in Jesus Alone

The message of Ephesians gives us a picture of God’s desire for His People, the Church.

Though we search for satisfaction and belonging in our surroundings, the book of Ephesians shows us that true fulfillment is only found within the Church. God designed the Church to be the sphere in which the purpose of our lives is realized, the model of unity and diversity in communion, and the courier of lasting hope in the midst of suffering.

The Church is a community of people who receive and display the grace of God, calling everyone to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Resurrection Changes Everything

To many, Easter is about eggs, over-sized rabbits, and pastel clothing. Though there is nothing wrong with any of these things inherently, the true purpose of Easter in the life of a believer is to promote something that should already be a part of his or her daily life: being impacted by the resurrection to the point of utter amazement.

This sermon first examines the reasonableness of the resurrection and proceeds to show us how the resurrection should change our lives.

God's Unconditional Love For His Church

The message of Ephesians gives us a picture of God’s desire for His People, the Church.

Though we search for satisfaction and belonging in our surroundings, the book of Ephesians
shows us that true fulfillment is only found within the Church. God designed the Church to be the sphere in which the purpose of our lives is realized, the model of unity and diversity in communion, and the courier of lasting hope in the midst of suffering.

The Church is a community of people who receive and display the grace of God,
calling everyone to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Frees Us To Love

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Once you understand the value of Jesus’ sacrifice, your notion of freedom is forever changed. You’ll discover that the most freeing thing in the world is to give yourself over entirely to the one you love, and this is exactly what happens in the gospel. The good news about Jesus is that he grants us freedom from our toughest struggles, our deepest scars, our strongest doubts, and our biggest fears.

When you find Jesus, you find true freedom.

Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus

"The Christmas Story" is much larger than simply that of a baby in a manger on a silent night; that baby was Jesus, God come in the flesh to save the souls of men by His death on the cross. This sermon focuses on three aspects of the true Christmas story: that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises made since the beginning of time, Jesus is not just our savior but our God, a position that demands and deserves worship, and finally that that worship must be a response to the work that Jesus has already done and nothing else.
